Fercho Improvement Project - FAQs

About the Improvement Project

During the summer of 2023, the Fercho Family YMCA will undergo finish upgrades including the enhancement of high-traffic areas, creation of new spaces to attract families and individuals, and improvements to address the aging facility.

Will the Fercho YMCA be closed during construction?

No. The facility will remain open during construction. Portions of the facility may be temporarily impacted at times during the construction. However, the Y remains committed to providing alternate options whenever possible.

What areas of the Fercho YMCA will be addressed during this project?

This project will provide a facelift and upgrades to areas throughout the older part of the Y. Specific areas that are a part of this project include: the Fitness Center, the Kids Gym, the Youth Center, group fitness studios and the studio hallway, the Child Care Early Learning Center (ELC) classrooms, the lobby and Member Services desk, the main staircases, the Social Center, and the gymnasium.

What is happening to the Fitness Center, the Kids Gym, gymnasium, and other facility amenities currently in the older part of the Y?

The facility improvement project at the Fercho Family YMCA will include a variety of finish upgrades and upgraded amenities for our members and community. The aging portions of the facility will receive new flooring, paint, furniture, and lighting. Newly renovated amenities will feature a new 'ninja warrior' inspired play area, the introduction of EGYM to the Fercho Fitness Center, additional express lockers, new fitness studio shades, community spaces, gymnasium windows and skylights, an improved Member Services desk, and more!

How will I know when changes are happening?

As we move throughout the project, the Y will update the Fercho YMCA page with project updates and on our social media pages.

What are some options for me this summer?

You will still have access to the Fercho facility during construction! Beginning June 12 and continuing while the fitness center portion of the project is underway, a temporary staffed free weight space will be available in Racquetball Court #3 and Selectorized strength equipment will be available in Studio B.

In addition to the temporary fitness spaces, members are also able to utilize YMCA360, which provides access to livestream and on-demand options at home, on the go, or any time you need!

If you’re looking to take your workout outside the facility, the Y is offering additional fitness challenges and classes for members during this time including the Rise & Shine Bootcamp, Summer Weight Loss Challenge, Tour de Fargo, and more! The Y is also partnering with local organizations to provide options for activity throughout the community with Yoga in the Park, Wellness at The Square, Walk Crew, and more!

While the Kids Gym is undergoing improvements, a temporary play space for children 12 & under with a parent/guardian will be available in the Gymnastics Room from 8:00am - 8:00pm daily.

As always, Schlossman YMCA is available for members to use and features an after-hours fitness center access.

Why is the Y doing this?

Opened in 1962, our facility is at an age and condition that requires a facelift to key high-traffic areas in order to improve the overall member experience. The YMCA chose to align the improvement projects within the facility to coincide with the work being done in the surrounding Island Park and nearby streets so as to minimize interruptions for members and the community.
