Service Animal Policy

Under North Dakota's service animal law and the federal Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), individuals with disabilities may bring service animals to the YMCA of Cass and Clay Counties.

Under the ADA, a service animal is a dog that has been trained to perform specific tasks for the benefit of a person with a disability.  Service animals are working animals, not pets. Service animals include signal dogs (for the hearing-impaired), guide dogs (for the sight-impaired), and other animals trained to provide aid for people with disabilities – including psychiatric service animals and seizure alert animals.

Current ADA service animal laws do not include emotional support animals: animals whose sole function is to provide comfort or emotional support. However, if you benefit from an emotional support animal and would like it to accompany you while you're in the YMCA, feel free to set up a meeting with Britt Selbo, Vice President of Member and Program Services, at 701.364.4111 or britt.selbo@ymcacassclay.org to further discuss your situation.

A service animal can be excluded from a public accommodation if it poses a direct threat to health and safety (For example, if a dog is aggressively barking/snapping at guests, the facility can ask the dog to be removed). An animal may also be excluded if it is not housebroken, or if it is out of control and the handler is unable or unwilling to effectively control it.
