Grandparents enjoy time with their grandson!

Where does summer go? I feel like I remember the kids just getting out of school and just like that they are heading back in the next week or so.

Are you a planner? As I have aged, I can say I have become one. Early in my life, not so much. Luckily for me, I am married to a planner and she has pushed me to plan for various things throughout our marriage. Kids, college, moving, buying houses, vacations, etc. all require plans. I am grateful that she has helped me think many of these things through. When it comes to thinking things through, I recently learned that only 30% of us adults have created a will. Yikes!

Wills aren't just for the rich and famous. They make life (and death) easier for everyone, regardless of socioeconomic status.

Consider your belongings. You may not think you own a lot, but you likely have more property than you realize: your home, vehicles, furniture, clothing, books, sentimental items, and more. If you don't have a will, your loved ones will be tasked with finding a home for this property when you pass on. Creating a will prevents family conflict, eliminates confusion, and ensures your assets go to the people you most want to have them. It also gives your family guidance and reassurance that they can fulfill your wishes during what is likely a very difficult time for them.

August is National Make-A-Will Month and here at the YMCA, we are partnering with FreeWill to help you create a legacy. In about 20 minutes you can create a will and shape your legacy. All at no cost to you!

FreeWill is an easy to use online platform that makes estate planning simple and accessible for the entire community. We encourage you to share it with your family, friends, and co-workers!

Why do you want to create a will?

1. Peace of mind: A will allows you to protect your loved ones and pets, so you know that they will be cared for no matter what.
2. Security: Creating your will and estate plan allows you to communicate important financial and healthcare decisions so you are prepared for the future.
3. Impact: By including an optional legacy gift in your will, you provide lasting support to the YMCA of Cass and Clay Counties and other nonprofits, enriching lives in our community for generations to come.

Through our partnership with FreeWill, you can now create or update your will in an easy, secure, and accessible way. FreeWill can also support you in creating a child guardianship plan, designating beneficiaries for things like your life insurance policy and 401k not covered in your will, and creating other documents like an Advance Healthcare Direction or Financial Power of Attorney.
